East Cooper residents will find this lovely lady hanging out in her web in dark garage areas, wood piles, below decks, under exterior furniture and in crawlspace areas. They prefer to live outdoors. The black widow enjoys eating just about any other insect ….mosquitoes, beetles, ants, caterpillars, and grasshoppers. It may be possible that she will even enjoy our Lowcountry fiddler crabs. Their webs are also very strong and capable of snaring the crabs.
The black widow is shiny black and has an orange or red hourglass shaped “tattoo” on its abdomen. The venom she injects into her prey can be 10 to 15 times more potent than a rattlesnake. Humans usually experience muscle pain, nausea and trouble breathing. She’s not aggressive though and will probably run from you.
