This interesting caterpillar is a far shot from a gummy worm. East Cooper residents may see this caterpillar in the fall. This is an “io moth“ (Fabricious) in his final caterpillar stage before entering his cocoon. It will become a familiar looking moth that appears as if it has eyes on its wings. As intriguing as this guy may seem, do NOT touch! The green spikes surrounding the caterpillar are connected to poison glands. The poison protects this insect from predators. Keep your eyes peeled for both beautiful and sometimes dangerous critters in the East Cooper area. We would recommend our regular Bi-Monthly Pest Service to keep caterpillars and other potentially dangerous pest away from your home.
