Termite alates or “swarmers” will leave their colony and take flight usually after a heavy rain storm in the spring and fall. Residents of the East Cooper area will see these swarmers by the thousands. If the swarm is at night, they will usually be attracted to light around your home. The kings and queens will search for a suitable mate. The swarmers will then land and drop their wings. The couple will burrow into a log, or dead tree stump, and create their home where they will live for the rest of their lives.  The queen is capable of  laying several hundred to several thousand eggs a day. A mature colony may reach several million termites.
